BEWARE! Puppy mills and backyard breeders are in our area.

The Renfrew County Branch OSPCA investigates numerous complaints concerning inadequate breeding operations.

What is a puppy mill?

According to the Ontario SPCA, the term "puppy mill" describes a breeding operation in which two or more female dogs are repeatedly bred for financial gain and are kept in substandard conditions.

Puppy mill dogs are often confined to small cages for their entire lives and commonly suffer from various infections and parasites. A puppy mill cannot meet the needs of a dog and is a form of cruelty.

What are backyard breeders?

Backyard breeders are people who breed their family pets for various reasons. Some want to make extra money, let their children experience birth, or just refuse to spay or neuter their pet.

Backyard breeders are not interested in quality. The parents have not been screened for health problems. There are no guarantees or contracts.

Backyard breeders are the largest contributors to pet overpopulation.

Before you adopt any pet, do research, ask questions and make sure you are not contributing to the continued suffering of other helpless animals.
