Questions To Ask A Rescue

Rescue groups are usually made up of a group of individuals with a common interest in a specific breed. Occasionally you will come across an all breed rescue. As well as young, healthy animals, rescues often take in animals with special needs, behavioural problems or seniors. Since most rescues specialize in one breed they are experienced in dealing with the needs and behaviours of that breed. If you are considering adopting from a rescue, ensure that you learn as much as possible about the organization and the animal you are considering adopting. You should always try to visit and handle the animal you are interested in.

What are the rescue's adoption procedures?

Most organizations will have you fill out an adoption questionnaire. Some groups will request a home visit.

How do they care for their animals?

The majority of rescue organizations utilize foster homes to house the animals in their care.

How do they decide which animals are adoptable?

Are the animals temperament and health tested? Who does the testing?

Are the animals spayed or neutered?

All animals should be spayed or neutered before an adoption is complete.

What other veterinary care has been provided?

Discuss their policies on veterinary check ups, vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment etc.

What are the costs involved in adopting and how are the funds used?

Most rescue groups are not-for-profit organizations. The adoptions fees raised are used to pay for the expenses incurred by the rescue caring for an animal. Some rescue groups also are registered Canadian charities.

Do they offer an in-home trial?

Some groups will offer you a trial period with the animal in your home.

What adoption and post adoption services are available?

Is adoption counselling provided to match pets will compatible homes? Are members available to help discuss any problems or offer advice? Do they have a return policy?

The right dog for you
