The Right Cat for You

Cats are wonderful affectionate pets. Each cat has it's own special personality and with careful selection you will find the
right cat for you.
Kitten or Cat?
Kittens are cute, playful bundles of energy. If this appeals to you then consider choosing a kitten. If a relaxed, less
mischievous pet appeals to you then look towards an adult cat. Remember kittens will become cats in a few months time.
Small kittens are usually quite delicate so if you have small children it may be best to choose a cat that is at least 3 months old.
Breed
If you walk through any animal shelter the majority of cats you see will be domestic cats. They come in a wide variety of
colours and sizes. Male, female, calico, tortishell, or tabby, the variations are endless. Another option may be a purebred cat.
Once again there are many to choose from. Many purebreds have specific characteristics that you should research before
making a final decision.
Short or Longhaired
Do you have the time or inclination to groom your cat daily. Many people enjoy grooming as a quiet, relaxing way to spend
time with their pet. If regular grooming won't fit into your schedule then a shorthair cat may be a better choice. Remember
that longhair cats, whether they are domestic or purebreds, will require a daily grooming. If not groomed these cats may
develop painful mats in their coat.
Personality
Along with variety in looks, cats also come with a wide variety of personalities. Vocal or quiet, relaxed or energetic, needy
or aloof, the right cat is out there to suit almost anyone. Take the time to get to know the characteristics of each a cat before
you make a final decision. Purebreds often have personality characteristics common to each breed so careful research is
important when deciding on a purebred cat.
Adding another Pet
Most cats quickly adapt to other pets. Dogs and cats can become lifelong companions that will curl up together on your bed.
Time and patience are the key factors to introducing any new pet to your home. Isolating your new cat in a separate room
and supervising interactions between pets are the easiest way to allow time for adjustment between new and existing pets.
