"If you can't decide between a Shepherd, a Setter, or a Poodle, get them all…."

There are so many types of dogs to choose from! They come in all different shapes, sizes, colours and personalities.
The important thing is to choose the right dog to fit your family and lifestyle.
Purebred or Mix Breed?
Dogs are either considered purebreds or mixed breeds. Each will offer their own advantages and disadvantages.
Purebreds
Most people have a favourite breed of dog. Often the preference is based on size or look. If you decide on a purebred dog
you will have a good chance of knowing the physical and behavioural characteristics of your dog. Purebreds are often bred
to meet standards specific to their breed. Many purebred dogs are prone to certain genetic problems common to each breed.
Choosing a "purebred" dog means that the dog has been registered with the Canadian Kennel club or a similar organization.
The CKC maintains a registry that records the dog's ancestry and identification information. Purebred status does not
guarantee health or temperment. If you decide on a purebred dog you will enjoy the benefit of knowing exactly what your
pup will look like when he or she grows up.
Mix Breeds
The size, appearance and temperment of mixed breed dogs can be predicted as well if the parentage is known. Mix breed
are prone to less genetic heath problems common to some purebred dogs. If you decide on a mixed dog you can enjoy the
best of more than one breed. *You're mixed breed dog will always be a unique companion.*
Take the time to learn about the different breeds of dogs.
Each breed has it's own characteristics and requirements. For example Border Collies are very quick to learn and very
energetic, German Shepherds are protective and Bichons will require daily grooming. Before deciding on a dog take into
consideration it's adult size, disposition, health concerns, grooming needs, and exercise requirements. Make sure that you
and your family are prepared to meet the needs of your new pet.
Puppy or Adult Dog
Many people choose a puppy for their new companion. They want to supervise the upbringing of their new pet right from the
start. With proper socialization and training the new puppy will have an excellent chance of becoming a wonderful, lifelong
companion.
On the other hand, families lacking the time or inclination to train a puppy may be more compatible with a mature dog.
Animal shelters are full of wonderful adult dogs waiting for new families.

Male or Female
Dogs of either sex will make wonderful pets. Most people choose a male or female based on personal preference.
Any well-trained, spayed or neutered animal will make a wonderful pet.
