How sweet it is!
by Peter Benner

Stevia (stevia rebaudiana) is a South American herb native to Paraguay, that is incredibly sweet to the taste. It is also known as sweet herb or honey leaf.

Just a fraction of a pinch between the fingers from a fresh leaf will leave a powerfully sweet taste in your mouth. In this form it is 10 to 15 times sweeter than table sugar. In a more concentrated, processed form, stevia powder is even more potent (70 to 400 times sweeter than sugar) and can be used sparingly to sweeten up your favourite drinks, desserts, and other cooking recipes.

I personally find stevia to be an excellent substitute for sugar. Through personal experience and experimentation, I have deduced that too much sugar in my diet leads to a buildup of candida albicans in my system. Sometimes after a sugar bender, I wake up with a "hangover" the next day as a result of overindulgence.

In my body, the effects of too much sugar consumpption concentrates specifically in the urinary and prostate areas, leaving me with a low grade bacterial infection in this area and therefore complications with ejaculation, lower back pain and prostate function. Because of all these symptoms, including the typical candida ones of fatigue, poor concentration/memory and pain broadcast throughout the body, I am trying to eliminate sugar from my regular diet at this point in time.

Stevia to the rescue!

This herb has no calories and no sugar to upset my system! It does not affect the blood sugar. It is amazing! In Japan, many cola drinks and other foods are available in stevia sweetened form, and yet in North America the herb is overregulated and put down in favour of the large sugar processing company products and artificial sweeteners with dangerous side effects, such as aspartame (see article on aspartame, "How Tame Is It?".

Monteagle Herbs makes stevia available to those people who have similar problems to mine, and those who cannot ingest sugar because they are diabetic or have some other health condition that prohibits them from eating refined, processed sugar. It is available in cut and sifted form or powdered form.

Besides acting as a natural sweetener without side effects, stevia also inhibits cavity and plaque growth on your teeth. The natives of Paraguay used it for centuries to aid in various health problems. It is also being studied for other medicinal uses such as: obesity, hyperactivity, high blood pressure, carbohydrate cravings, tobacco and alcohol cravings, hypoglycemia, indigestion, yeast infections, skin toning and healing.
